Trump Explodes in Wild Midnight Social Media Spree

8/22/2025

President Donald Trump late Wednesday night, August 20, and early Thursday morning launched into a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, targeting mail-in voting, MSNBC, and California Governor Gavin Newsom in what appears to be an escalating social media confrontation.

The midnight posting spree occurred as Trump faces mounting pressure over stalled Ukraine peace negotiations and growing criticism of his diplomatic approach with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The social media outburst comes amid significant developments in Trump’s Ukraine peace efforts, which have hit major roadblocks just one week after his high-profile meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov downplayed prospects for an immediate summit between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stating that such a meeting could only occur once all major components of a peace agreement are thoroughly worked out by experts and ministers.

Trump’s frustration with the diplomatic stalemate became evident in his Thursday social media posts about Ukraine, where he criticized former President Joe Biden’s approach to the conflict. The President indicated that Biden would not allow Ukraine to fight back, only defend, and compared the situation to a sports team with fantastic defense but no offensive capability. Trump wrote that “It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invaders country.”

The timing of Trump’s social media activity coincides with Putin laying out his specific demands for any Ukraine peace settlement. According to three sources familiar with Kremlin thinking, Putin is demanding that Ukraine surrender the entire eastern Donbas region, renounce NATO membership ambitions, remain neutral, and prohibit Western troops from being deployed in the country. These conditions represent a significant obstacle to Trump’s stated goal of reaching a quick resolution to the conflict.

Russian officials have also demanded veto power over any Western security guarantees for Ukraine. Lavrov stated on August 20 that serious discussions about Western security guarantees without Russian input constitute a road to nowhere, effectively seeking to undermine ongoing efforts between the United States, Europe, and Ukraine to establish lasting peace conditions. The Russian Foreign Minister threatened firm and harsh action to ensure Russia’s legitimate interests are included in any postwar security arrangement.

Trump’s late-night posting activity reflects broader tensions in his administration’s approach to international conflicts. The President has claimed to have ended six to seven wars since taking office, including brief conflicts between Israel and Iran, Pakistan and India, and various other international disputes. However, many of these claimed victories involve ceasefires that lasted only days or weeks, and several conflicts have since resumed hostilities.

The President’s attacks on MSNBC and Governor Newsom appear to be part of an ongoing pattern of late-night social media confrontations with perceived political opponents. Newsom has been actively engaging with Trump on social media platforms, often mimicking the President’s communication style and challenging his policy positions on various issues, including immigration and disaster relief.

The President’s criticism of mail-in voting in his Wednesday night posts echoes longstanding concerns he has raised about election integrity. These attacks come as several states continue to expand mail-in voting options and as the 2026 midterm elections approach. Trump has consistently questioned the security and reliability of mail-in ballots, despite limited evidence of widespread fraud in recent elections.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials report continued Russian attacks on civilian targets. Zelensky described recent strikes on residential areas in Ukraine as treacherous, including attacks that wounded 14 people in Okhtyrka in the Sumy region. The Ukrainian President emphasized that these ongoing attacks demonstrate the need for continued pressure on Moscow and new sanctions until diplomacy becomes fully effective.

Trump has set a two-week timeline for determining whether diplomatic progress is possible in Ukraine. During a radio interview with Todd Starnes, the President indicated that within two weeks, the administration will know one way or another if a deal can be reached, suggesting that alternative approaches may be necessary if current negotiations fail. This deadline adds urgency to the ongoing diplomatic efforts while Trump continues his social media battles on multiple fronts.

The combination of stalled peace talks, Russian intransigence, and Trump’s late-night social media activity suggests growing frustration within the administration over the pace of diplomatic progress. As international pressure mounts for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, Trump’s attention appears divided between complex foreign policy challenges and domestic political confrontations playing out on social media platforms.
